Manuka Street Hospital is the Nelson Tasman region’s only private surgical hospital, providing a range of surgical services to the Nelson region.

Jean provides post-operative physiotherapy to patients in the hospital after surgery.

Orthopaedic surgery, for example a knee or hip replacement, is the starting point of rehabilitation, with the aim of returning you to optimal fitness, strength and movement as soon as possible. This does not happen automatically after surgery. Specific exercises will help to restore movement and muscle tone and it is important that this starts as soon as possible after surgery.

Jean spends time going through the best exercises to aid your recovery from the operation, as well as teaching you how to use crutches, and discussing all the practical aspects of returning home and how to increase activity safely.

You may require follow-up visits at the clinic, to progress exercises and assist with regaining range of movement and strength, especially if you are returning to work.

If you are scheduled for surgery at Manuka Street Hospital, you may wish to contact Jean at the clinic before your admission to discuss your condition. A visit to the clinic to start a strengthening programme before your surgery can help improve the outcome.

Please note

Physiotherapy is not automatically provided to all patients undergoing surgery at Manuka Street Hospital. You may have to request a visit from Jean by asking your surgeon, or the nurse looking after you.
